What are the odds of both my grandfathers passing away within 3 months of each other?
As you know by now, I was never close to any of my grandparents mostly because I was one of the youngest and hence, they didn't take care of me. My siblings and older cousins were constantly being taken care by my both sets of grandparents because all the parents needed to go to work.
Over the past few years, my grandfather was growing weaker and weaker, especially after my grandmother passed away 10 years ago. My grandfather used to be very fit. He cycled everywhere and was super active but after she was gone, it was like he had given up. . .
There are so many stories I could tell you about my grandfather but. . . I don't want this post to be too wordy and some things are best kept in my mind for myself and close to my heart.
My father used to tell me that when he was younger, my grandfather used to go out all the time and rarely ate at home. Every Sunday, he'd go watch Horse Racing and place bets. He also loved eating unhealthy food such as Char Kuay Teow, Hokkien Mee, etc. He'd pick Chinese and Hawker food over Western food any day.
My grandfather also used to be a post master and they shifted a lot, moving from post office to post office of which Changi Post Office held the best memories for my dad. Apparently when they first moved there, within 2 weeks, practically the whole church knew who my grandfather was. That just showed you how friendly he was.
When my grandfather was a teenager, and the Japanese soldiers came to Singapore (during WW2), they somehow hired him to be their assistant, which is weird because he's Eurasian and the Japanese hated Caucasians and Eurasians, but it's probably because they didn't know he was Eurasian because he looks pretty Chinese. Anyway, he rode around in the jip with them and they even let him have his own sword. When people bowed down to the soldiers, they bowed down to him too. LOL.
Anyway, moving on, my grandfather was a good man. He was extremely holy too, as was my grandmother. He became a sacristan for 20 years and cycled to church every morning at 4am just to open the gates for people. If he was late for a few minutes, people would kind of scold him. My grandmother also scolded him for giving too much face to people. He had also actually tried to join the priesthood before he married my grandmother but I guess it wasn't his calling after all.
During the funeral mass, my dad, being the eldest, gave the eulogy. I can't exactly remember everything he said but here are a few points.
My grandfather was generous and empathetic. Whenever he saw people cry, he would give in. During the racial riots in Singapore, there were some Malays (I think the postmen and their families), who needed a place to hide so they came to their house, begging to be let in. He wanted to say no, because it was such a dangerous thing to do but the moment the wives started crying, his heart gave in and he let them stay. They stayed there for 3 days.
Whenever they hosted parties at their house, my grandfather always made sure he bought a lot of food and refreshments just to ensure his guests were happy and enjoying themselves and my grandmother used to scold him for spending so much for others. But that was just in his nature. He was a generous man.
He also didn't have any favourites among his children. He had 3 daughters and 5 sons and yet he treated each of them equally and never favoured one more than the rest. He was also super family-oriented and was proud of everyone. He would tell his friends about his children's accomplishments and sometimes he'd over-exaggerate. For example, when my dad passed his BAR Exam, he told people my dad became the Chief Justice. HAHAHA.
Also, like I said, my grandfather was extremely holy and prayerful. When they went to church on Sundays, he'd ask his kids if they were in a "state of grace". If they were not, he wouldn't let them go for communion. But of course, they'd always say that yes, they were in a state of grace.
That's just one of the values he upheld. Religion was extremely important. When my uncle said that he was going to marry a Muslim and convert, my grandparents prayed in front of the altar everyday. My grandmother was also extremely sad, right til the day she died. I guess she was hoping that he would come back to the Catholic faith /:
Another value is that you had to respect your elders. Always greet them, which I do admit, sometimes I don't. . .
I realised that as the years passed, my grandfather became more emotional and he'd always cry, especially when he thought about my grandmother. Few months ago at my 21st birthday, as he was leaving, he kept waving to everyone while crying. So I walked him out and waited with him til my uncle came round with the car. I even took a selfie with him. I don't know why but I somehow felt that would be the last time he would ever be attending my birthday.
Also, like I said, my grandfather was extremely active last time. Over the last 5 years, he became less physically abled. He always needed help to walk anywhere, even to go to the toilet. He also became wheel-chair bound. As my father said, "The last 5 years were extremely frustrating for my dad." He constantly asked God when it was his time to go. He had lost his ability to be independant and walk by himself and also he had lost his love. I realised that as the years passed, my grandfather became more emotional and he'd always cry, especially when he thought about my grandmother.
Well Papa, God heard you and you finally got your wish. I hope your happier up there in heaven with Mama Mabel, and all your friends.
We'll meet again, one day in Paradise <3
It's funny how death brings everyone together. . .
First time in more than 10 years that we've taken a full cousin photo.
Hi everyone and welcome to my first ever Favourites post. I had originally planned to do a Favourites video but my laptop is full at the moment and has insufficient space if I wanted to edit a video. Maybe next month or something, once I manage to clear out some folders.
I know it's already pretty late for a May Favourites post but. . . who cares?
Anyway, my choice of Favourites are extremely random and range from beauty products to books to television shows. So here are the products/things I've been loving for the month of May.
1) EOS LIP BALM (HONEYSUCKLE HONEYDEW)
I purchased this lip balm from Nex. They were having a Smoochiezz + Watsons sale so I decided to give it a try after hearing so much rave going on about it. I picked out the Honeysuckle Honeydew scented one because it smelled so delicious and honeydew is one of Matt's favourites fruits *winks*
I've really been loving it so far and I use it almost everyday. Sometimes I just use it alone, sometimes I use it as a base for my lip gloss. It really makes my lips feel moisturised and not dry. It isn't really that cheap however. It cost me $15.90 and I read somewhere that it costs at least half of that in America. But oh well. . . I doubt I'll be heading to America anytime soon anyway. . .
2) NYX SOFT MATTE LIP CREAM (06 ISTANBUL)
Before making my purchase, I did do a bit of research about the NYX lip products and apparently the matte lip creams are pretty popular. I decided to get a popular shade for myself too and I purchased the shade, Istanbul. It's a soft pinkish colour, which I really love, because I absolutely love light pink shades for my lips.
I also love that the lip cream is not drying at all and feels pretty natural on my lips. It however, is not very lasting and you'll have to keep reapplying it from time to time but then, that's okay. And it cost me only $9 from Sephora. I'm planning to purchase Amsterdam next.
3) NYX EXTRA CREAMY ROUND LIPSTICK (505A SHIVA)
This shade is a blue-toned fuschia shade. This lipstick lasts extremely long on my lips and I love how it really pops. I only use this when I'm not using eyeshadows at all and am only using eyeliner if not, it would be too BOOMZ.
It cost me only $9 as well and I bought it from a Smoochiezz + Watsons sale as well. I'm sure you can purchase it from Sephora as well.
Here's the swatches for Ibiza and Shiva with and without flash.
4) NYX BRONZER AND BLUSHER COMBO (BBC02 IBIZA)
I've been searching for a good and cheap bronzer for quite some time now. I got this for $19.90 at the Smoochiezz + Watsons sale. I know it really isn't that cheap but oh well, I was in a spending mood that day and I thought it wasn't too bad because it was practically 2-in-1 what with there being a bronzer AND a blusher.
When I use it, I just spread my brush over both sides and apply it to the hollows of my cheeks and around the edges of my forehead.
5) YANKEE CANDLE (VANILLA CUPCAKE)
I've been wanting to purchase a scented candle for quite some time already. Decided to get a Yankee Candle because they have a shop at Parkway Parade. They were having 20% off on some scents of the month which is why I chose the Vanilla Cupcake scented one.
The first 2 times I lit it up, I didn't find the scent very powerful and I felt that it was pretty weak. But the next few times, I found that the smell really filled my room and I realized the longer I burnt it, the stronger the scent was. My mother hates the smell though, LOL. And my sister says the candles from Bath and Body Works are much better. Will buy one when I'm feeling a bit rich. This Yankee Candle wasn't really cheap either. I paid around $30 for it.
6) ADVENTURE TIME IPHONE 5S CASING
Not many people know this but I enjoy watching Adventure Time. Recently, I was walking past a Flip Flop shop at Bedok Mall when I saw that they were selling Adventure Time merchandise and I got pretty excited about it. I left the shop with an Princess Bubblegum t-shirt ($25) and a Lumpy Princess phone case ($7).
Don't judge.
7) THE FAULT IN OUR STARS BOOK
I'm sure many of you have heard about TFIOS. It's written by John Green, who is one of the funniest authors I know of. I follow his tumblr and YouTube and oh my, he's hilarious.
I remember hearing about the book from tumblr early last year. People kept quoting it and stuff so I decided to purchase the book from Kinokuniya and I must say, I didn't regret it one bit. I even introduced it to my Official Bitch Club and Iris and Huisan got hooked to it too. It's about Hazel and Augustus, who both have cancer, and about their love for each other. Go read it if you haven't yet.
I've been re-reading it for the millionth time again to prepare myself for the movie.
“Some people don't understand the promises they're making when they make them," I said.
"Right, of course. But you keep the promise anyway. That's what love is. Love is keeping the promise anyway.”
8) SKINNY MINT 14 DAY TEATOX
I actually can't decide if this is a favourite or I hate it. I haven't been drinking it as diligently as I should but it's mostly because I hate the taste and smell immensely. I've seen that it has indeed given me some positive effects and has made my tummy much less bloated and I feel that I've been eating healthier. Will blog proper about it another time though, when I'm done drinking it.
9) THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR
It's basically about how Will Smith moves from Philadelphia to stay in Bel Air with his aunt's family. It's super duper funny and you'll have to watch it to see why.
And this concludes my May Favourites! See you in my next post!
I've been feeling so miserable over the past few days. I caught the flu bug last week and had a fever of 40 deg Celsius for 2 days in a row. It's not fun being sick.
And on top of that, I've had to study for my term test and it's just so frustrating because I feel like nothing's been going in. Really hope I pass. I really did put in a lot of effort this time.
Anyway, I just got back home. I won a pair of tickets to catch the Fault in Our Stars movie premiere at GV Plaza Sing. Couldn't get another person to go with me, cause I was kinda lazy to ask around after those I asked said they were busy. So I just ended up going alone. It was my first time watching a movie alone and it wasn't too bad I guess.
The movie was pretty awesome. They followed at least more than 80% of the book, and I guess that's mostly also because John Green was on the movie set pretty often and so actively involved in the production of the movie. I teared a fair bit during the movie too. Go catch it if you can. You won't regret it.
After watching the movie, I got pretty addicted to one of the songs in the soundtrack. It's called All of The Stars by Ed Sheeran.
I'll be uploading my May Favourites post tmr or on Friday. Till then, see ya!
